6 Steps to Hearing God in the Mundane of Life

I began a weekly devotional about hearing from God in my coffee cup. (Check out my weekly devotional page to find it.) The literal thought of hearing God speaking through my coffee cup was laughable. However, I did hear from God in the sense of His speaking to me through truths revealed in an everyday object and scripture I had hidden in my heart. I wanted to expand on the concept of hearing from God daily. I put together a list of steps to remind me and help others look and listen for lessons from God.

1. Withdraw and be still

Jesus gave us examples of withdrawing somewhere alone and focusing on His Father. Luke 5:16 is one example of one of these times. The world is loud and distracting. We need to find times to step away from the noise and listen.

2. Empty your mind of worries

We often choose to avoid our thoughts because they are full of doubts, worries, stresses, and fears. We are scared to give them free rein. They can lead to scary places. Matthew 6:34 tells us to turn all those things over to God and focus on His provision. Once we are no longer afraid of where we are, thoughts might lead us we are free.

3. Ask God for understanding

God is willing to pour understanding on us if only we ask. Jeremiah 33:3 tells us to call on Him, and He will show us great and mighty things.

4. Hide Scripture in your heart

God actively talks to us through His word. It is vital that we know and can easily recall His words. Psalm 119:11 explains that memorizing scripture is a way of hiding it in our hearts to be used at a moment’s notice.

5. Practice listening

I Thessalonians 5:17 commands us to pray without ceasing. If we are in a constant state of prayer and open to hearing, opportunities will arise more frequently.

6. Recognize His voice

John 10:27 tells us that sheep recognize their Master’s voice. We must be familiar enough with God and His ways to recognize Him. Studying scripture to see His character and praying sufficiently to develop a personal knowledge of Him allows us to know His voice and respond to it.

I have created a free printable with the steps and verses. Check out my resources page to download it for your personal use.
